From the New Towns Taskforce report:
“The new town proposal in Cheshire East is concentrated around the existing village of Adlington. The proposal, submitted by landowners Belport Adlington Limited, would deliver a standalone new town of over 14,000-20,000 homes on approximately 970 hectares of greenfield land. Benefitting from largely consolidated ownership, Adlington presents a compelling placemaking opportunity”.
Land purchased by Belport in December 2023, as shown in the picture below:
These proposals are currently the subject of a Strategic Environment Assessment, Stop Adlington New Town are attempting to understand the scope and timeline for these so appropriate representations can be made.
The lack of engagement with residents, local councils, country councils and the current sitting Labour MP has shocked many. The public in East Cheshire fear this has been painted by the New Towns Task Force as an attractive financial opportunity for the Government to work with one landowner with Green Belt destruction not only disregarded but seen as a positive as it delivers fresh building land.
The area proposed would create urban sprawl stretching from Manchester to Macclesfield and unlike other proposed New Towns was not proposed by the council but by a commercial company, Belport Adlington Limited, that names its partners as large global real estate firms.
Given this is the only one of the 12 proposals that was not proposed by a council, Stop Adlington New Town will be asking when this proposal was submitted and what consultation has taken place.
